*Day 1* *Jonah 1:4-5* When storms strike, our instinct is often to rely on our own experience and common sense, tossing cargo overboard while the real problem stays buried. Afflictions sent by God cannot be managed by human techniques. We need to stop insisting on our own answers and instead fall prostrate before God in faith. _Question:_ Are you relying on human experience, or are you seeking God first in your current storm? *Day 2* *Jonah 1:7-9* When our own efforts fail, we can easily treat God like an unseen fate, looking for quick relief rather than a real relationship. But through Jonah, God revealed Himself as the Lord of heaven, the sea, and the dry land. Our fear must shift from dreading our circumstances to revering the living God. _Question:_ Are you merely looking for a solution, or are you seeking to know God Himself? *Day 3* *Jonah 1:13* Even after hearing the solution, the sailors rowed desperately toward land, letting their own conscience overrule God's word. A human conscience that is not shaped by Scripture will sit in judgment over God's revelation. Straining in our own self-righteous effort leaves us stuck in the very same place. _Question:_ What word from God are you resisting because it conflicts with your own standards? *Day 4* *Jonah 1:14* At the end of their human striving, the sailors cried out directly to the Lord in genuine prayer. True prayer surrenders our own methods and submits completely to God's will, confessing that He alone does as He pleases. In that moment of total surrender, the Lord became their personal God. _Question:_ How can you lay down your own methods and pray for God's will to be done today? *Day 5* *Jonah 1:15-16* The sailors obeyed God's revelation by casting Jonah into the sea, and the raging waters immediately grew calm. Witnessing this, their terror of the storm turned into great and reverent awe of the Lord, leading them to sacrifice and make vows. True worship flows from this holy reverence and radical obedience. _Question:_ What self-reliance do you need to cast out today so you can walk in reverent obedience? N.E.W. Seminary
